Quinolones are next generation antimicrobial agents. In general they are broad-spectrum antibiotics especially active against Gram – bacteria, which represent the group of bacteria that are commonly associated with fish bacterial diseases. They were initially used in aquacultures in Japan but in the last 35 years they are widely used in Europe as well. Their mode of action is both bacteriostatic and bactericidal, inhibiting DNA gyrase and therefore DNA unwinding and replication. Bacterial resistance can easily develop. Fluoroquinolones are second generation quinolones.
