Sulfonamides are widely used in aquaculture for the past 35 years in many countries. They act by competitive inhibition of the biosynthesis of folic acid in bacterial cells. They are wide spectrum bacteriostatic drugs. Often, sulfonamides are combined with trimethoprim, another inhibitor of folate biosynthesis, which results in a ten-fold increase of their antimicrobial action.
