Vetregard® is a natural food component comprised of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) which has been processed through
autolysis and other proprietary procedures to maximise the content of Beta 1.3 glucan. This manufacturing process is well documented and through ISO 9001 requirements ensures batch to batch consistency and reliability.
Beta glucans themselves have been extensively studied, especially with respect to their effect on the immune system in a variety of species. According to the most recent information, pathogens attach themselves to macrophages at specific sites, termed iC3B sites. This typically stimulates phagocytosis, but in some cases the pathogens attach to but are not engulfed by the macrophages and some enter the host cell and divide rapidly to cause destruction of the cell. This process can ultimately lead to an epidemic in an intensive livestock population.
